Nigeria advances plans for two AI-ready data centres
A feasibility study for two locations
On 24 September 2026, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency announced support for a feasibility study for two data centres in Nigeria, in Lagos and Delta State. The project is being developed with INFRAGORA Global Capital. The study will assess the technical and financial requirements for facilities able to support artificial-intelligence workloads.
Why local capacity matters
USTDA says Africa hosts less than 2% of global data-centre capacity. Dependence on distant servers can increase latency and make data governance more difficult for businesses, public institutions and researchers. Local facilities could improve reliability and create a stronger base for cloud and AI services.
A wider digital ecosystem
The proposed AFRIDATA platform links data centres with cloud services, reliable power, networking, cybersecurity and skills development. The announcement concerns a feasibility study, not yet a commercial launch. Its significance lies in the effort to build secure, scalable and locally relevant infrastructure that can support Nigeria’s digital economy and wider regional growth.
